Challenges and opportunities for sustainable development of the national parks in the Republic of North Macedonia – Workshop

On 15th and 16th of March, in the scope the project ‘Digitalization of Governance as Tool for Rejuvenating Democracy’, The Macedonian Chevening Alumni Association (MCAA) organized a workshop – ‘Challenges and opportunities for sustainable development of the national parks in Republic of North Macedonia’ – supported by the Chevening Alumni Program Fund of the British Government.

The opening speech was held by the Minister of Environment and Physical Planning – Naser Nuredini, together with the British Ambassador Rachel Galloway, which was followed by an introduction to the workshop by the President of the Macedonian Chevening Alumni Association.

This workshop was facilitated by our colleague and Service Designer Milosh Sokolikj who, due to his knowledge and expertise, guided the participants in the two-day workshop. Contribution in the facilitation and the overall process also gave our colleague Sofija Bogeva who is a Chevening alumni and ex-vice president of the MCAA.

The first day of the workshop had its focus on the stakeholders – mapping possibilities for sustainable development, while the second day the Chevening Alumni with few experts worked on developing the proposed ideas into more concrete project concepts.

During the workshop the participants developed 8 proposals and 3 detailed project concepts.

The ideas that came out of the workshop revolved around:

  • New technologies in the service of the national parks;
  • New ways of financing to ensure sustainability;
  • Redesign of existing services in order to offer better user experiences in the national parks.

The workshop was attended by nearly 40 people – representatives of the 4 national parks, municipalities in which they operate, representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, representatives from Increasing Market Employability Program (IME), as well as civil and business sector representatives.

We would like to thank the Macedonian Chevening Alumni Association – MCAA for this opportunity to share the knowledge and expertise in designing and facilitating innovation workshops and also to everyone who participated for their engagement and dedication.
